The first recorded coin of al-'Aziz billah from Messina on Sicily
Lot 4253
ISLAMIC, Fatimids. al-'Aziz billah, AH 365-386 / AD 975-996. Half Dirham (Silver, 21 mm, 1.25 g), Masini (Messina on Sicily), date illegible. Cf. Album 705 (for half dirhams of al-Aziz billah). Nicol -. Apparently unique and of great importance. Very fine.

Fatimid coins from Masini (Messina on Sicily) are exceedingly rare, with Nicol listing only two types from this mint, a half dirham struck by the caliph al-Hakimi bi-Amr Allah (Nicol 1068) and a quarter dinar struck by the caliph al-Mustansir billah (Nicol 2098). This appears to be the first recorded coin from Messina struck under the caliph, al-Aziz billah
